BlueHost is a web hosting solution offering shared Linux hosting to millions, with—they claim—over 20,000 new customers per month. Some of these new customers have seen a BlueHost review, found BlueHost by searching for “shared Linux hosting” or some other search term, or noticed a website that they admired was hosted at BlueHost by looking at the favicon. Others have been recruited by a BlueHost affiliate.
According to the BlueHost website, $5 million was paid in commissions in 2010. Since BlueHost affiliates are paid $65.00 for each referral, this means that about 76,923 referral fees were paid to affiliates.
BlueHost provides affiliates with banners and links that are connected to their affiliate account, the ability to create custom links for multiple affiliate campaigns, and administration tools to view the click-through ratios of various promotions and track conversions and payments.
Those who register as BlueHost must accept the BlueHost affiliate terms. The terms have four sections related to Payment, Reversals, Advertising Compliance, and Deactivation. Here are summaries of each of the four sections.
Payment—Signups for new accounts are credited to an affiliate after a customer has clicked on one of the affiliate’s referral links, signed up for an account, and had an active account for 90 days. BlueHost affiliates are not paid until they have a balance of $100 or more, and payments are not processed until 45 days after that last day of the month during which the sale occurred.
The affiliate’s tax information must be on file in order for the affiliate to be paid. The tax information can be received after the first commission is earned, but if it has not been received by then, the commission will be forfeited. Payments are made through a check or PayPal account. Affiliates earning more than $10,000/month are eligible to receive payment via wire transfer. With any payment method, it is the affiliate’s responsibility to make sure that their account can accept US-based company payments. The fee for reissuing a payment is $35, which is deducted from the affiliate’s accounts.
Reversals—In order to prevent hosting sign-ups that are not authentic, BlueHost will reverse the commission of an affiliate if the new account does not continue for 90 consecutive days, if the account is downgraded to a term of less than one year, if the new account is fraudulently set up with false information or a fake or stolen credit card, or if a credit card chargeback is issued.
Advertising Compliance—Affiliates are forbidden to use cookie stuffing, domain forwarding, copy the BlueHost website or any portion of it for display on their own sites, tamper with the links in the advertising material provided by BlueHost, or offer any type of incentive to encourage people to become BlueHost customers.
Deactivation—Deactivation and reversal of all commissions will occur if the Affiliate Terms are violated, if the affiliate provides misleading advertising or is suspected of fraud, if the affiliate’s account results in many new users with fraudulent accounts, or if the affiliate wishes to end his or her affiliation status. BlueHost may deactivate a BlueHost affiliate account at any time and without providing the affiliate with notice or warning.
